I’m a 38 year-old that saw others get ahead in life and figured, “WHY NOT ME TOO!”
My childhood was a mess, my teen years were better, my early 20s were confusing, my late 20s were depressing, and my 30s are the best part yet!
Here is the longer version:
I grew up in communist Poland and came to United States when I was 12 years-old. I was a pretty good athlete. I had a great high school and college education. But as I heard the infamous graduation words, “today is the first day of the rest of your life,” I craved one more adventure before settling down for the “rest of my life.”
I ventured out to California and having just acquired a teaching degree, I found a summer camp job teaching gifted students at the UCLA campus. I loved Southern California for its beaches, the nightlife and the laid back atmosphere. However, instead of trying to secure a full time job there, I spent all my money having fun. At the end of that summer I was broke and jobless. My adventure was over and it was time to go back home to New York.
Since the school year was already in progress, my only option was to substitute teach until I got my foot in some district’s door. I subbed throughout the area and then my day came. No, I didn’t find a full time gig, instead I got the assignment that then I wished I never accepted. After a rough day, I did what any frustrated 24 year-old would do. I got some cheap beer and got after it. I spent my night thinking about California and I questioned my career choices. Then out of the blue, my answer came in a form of a late night, self-help infomercial. I’ve turned off that infomercial many times before. However, that night I watched it and like a sucker, I dialed the number.
After a few months of preparation and research, I bought into a Fish Window Cleaning franchise. I did so well that a couple of years later I started a real estate company called Great Places For Smiling Faces and then an advertising company called NY Mobile Ads.
I was on top of the world and most certainly on my way to making millions when 2008 happened. My whole world nearly fall apart quicker than it started. On the verge of financial ruin, I reached out to a business coach. He helped me change the way I thought and operated my companies. Through many professional heartaches and personal heartbreaks, I was able to survive and turn around.
SO, LET’S DO THIS!
